Elisa Nabel, a researcher at the Morishita Lab at Mount Sinai, presented her work to MMC’s Neuroscience Club on December 6th.
On December 6, 2017, Marymount Manhattan’s Neuroscience Club hosted a guest speaker from the Morishita research lab at Mount Sinai. The speaker, Elisa Nabel, shared her dissertation research on local and long-range neuronal plasticity in the prefrontal cortex anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) during development and its role in visual attention. Her work investigates the function of a protein named Lynx1 and its role as a master regulator of local/long-range plasticity. Local and long-range distal inputs need to have a proper ratio in the ACC in order for visual attention to function properly, and Elisa has found that Lynx1 can adjust this ratio to restore balance and rescue attention deficits. She is now applying this research to disease models that show attention deficits, such as autism.
Elisa is a 6th-year MD/PhD student at Mount Sinai. She was introduced by Neuroscience Club President and MMC senior Keaven Caro.
As MMC worked to reopen its Main Campus for the Fall 2020 semester, the Department of Natural Sciences developed a plan to continue performing in-person laboratory courses while also accommodating remote learners. MMC’s science labs underwent extensive safety reinforcement to allow in-person students to participate in labs with their remote partners learning from home.
