HEOP Students Earn Recognition

New York, N.Y. – MMC’s HEOP students will soon be completing their six-week summer session at Marymount Manhattan College. To celebrate their achievement, the College is hosting an awards ceremony on August 8.

The HEOP summer program offers pre-freshmen the opportunity to take college prep courses to help them learn and develop skills that will assist them during their time at MMC. In addition to writing, math, and history courses, the summer program also offers courses to help students develop good study habits and test-taking skills.

HEOP Director Blanca Vega said all pre-freshman students will receive recognition for their work during the summer session.

“Students who have obtained the highest grades in writing, math, and history will receive special recognition, and the student who has demonstrated most perseverance and improvement will also be presented with a special award.”

“I have felt the end of summer ceremony is a very important rite of passage for our pre-freshmen,” says Vega of the ceremony which has been held since 2006. “This event is to officially induct them into the Marymount Manhattan community as freshmen college students.”

MMC’s HEOP will be welcoming 10 freshman at the start of the 2010-2011 academic year which brings the total number of HEOP students to 52.

Since 1969, The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) has been an integral part of Marymount Manhattan College (MMC). The program has enabled students with academic potential who have faced financial hardship to achieve their lifetime goal of earning a college degree. The HEOP is a New York State funded program that supports five years of undergraduate study. The college access and retention program provides a supplementary form of financial assistance for students who attend private, independent colleges, in New York State, such as Marymount Manhattan College.

Marymount Manhattan College is an urban, independent, liberal arts college. The mission of the College is to educate a socially and economically diverse population by fostering intellectual achievement and personal growth and by providing opportunities for career development.
