MMC’s National Student Speech Language Hearing Association Lends a Hand to those Impacted by Hurricane Harvey

MMC is proud to acknowledge the College’s chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA—also known as “Speech Club” at MMC), whose students mobilized in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey to provide some much-needed support to other NSSLHA chapters and speech therapy programs in Texas.

The MMC NSSLHA officers who took the lead on this project include Jennifer Blake, Francesca Costanza, Danielle Kanceleric, and Stephanie Alverio. Below is a message from the club’s Vice President, Jennifer Blake ’18, describing the motivation behind the project and its powerful impact:

“I am so excited to share the philanthropic project that Marymount Manhattan College’s (MMC) National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) has taken on. After surviving and rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy, we were touched and inspired to help those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. We reached out to all 18 undergraduate Speech-Language Pathology programs down in Texas. On behalf of NSSLHA, we wanted to make sure our fellow SLP sisters and brothers were okay. We received a lot of positive confirmation, however, there was a definite need for help. We were provided with donation lists and projects. MMC’s NSSLHA worked directly with Family First Speech Therapy, which is a clinic in downtown Houston, Texas. They lost all of their therapy materials which can be expensive to replace. After partnering up with Baylor University’s NSSLHA, we agreed to double their donations. The clinic was provided with a surplus of items such as activity books, headphones, stuffed toys, sensory items, and many more. MMC’s NSSLHA is so very proud to be involved with helping those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Philanthropic activities are crucial to not only self-development, but professional development, as well. MMC’s NSSLHA would like to extend a huge THANK YOU! to our program chair, Dr. Ann Jablon, and advisor, Professor Denise Cruz who have stood behind our idea the entire time. As Charles Dickens once said, “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” We encourage you all to reach out, give help where you can, and remember the power of kindness.
