International Studies Major Earns Internship with State Department in France

Marseilles, FR: Catherine Terez (’17) is currently serving as an intern with the Department of State while she studies abroad in Marseille, a port city in southern France historically known as a center for trade and immigration. “Due to the smaller size of the consulate, I am able to work with several of the departments within the consulate, it all depends on the day,” she explains. “Recently I have been working with our cultural affairs assistant who organizes outreach projects throughout the Provence region. All the work the consulate does- which ranges from helping American citizens living in France renew their passports to organizing events that bring the community together and spread American culture, is compiled at the end of the month in a newsletter. I have worked on editing this newsletter, and along the way learned a lot about working for the State Department overseas.”

Before her travels this Fall, Catherine previously interned for US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand here in New York City, and, while studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, she interned with the Honourable Courtney Houssos at Parliament of New South Wales. She writes, “Each of these internships gave me insight into what it is like to work for the government here in the US as well as abroad.” Congratulations, Catherine!
