Honors Day Scheduled March 16 to Recognize Academic and Creative Excellence

Honors Day features the Honors Colloquium, which takes place throughout the afternoon in the College’s classrooms and performances spaces. Selected students will present research papers, scholarly works, creative projects (such as paintings and photographs, dramatic and dance performances, and videos), and the results of scientific projects conducted independently and in concert with faculty mentors. 

“Honors Day is the highlight of the academic year at the College because it allows us to shine a spotlight on students that have produced outstanding academic and creative work in a wide variety of disciplines,” said Adrienne Baxter Bell, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history and chair of the Academic Honors Committee. 

“Every March, Marymount Manhattan creates an Honors Day to feature the students who most inspire us all,” Bell said. “Through their hard work and creativity, these students have taken existing problems and found fresh solutions and responses to them. They show us what it means to transcend the ordinary and the commonplace, and to strive for great achievement. We sense that, in so doing, they have given a good part of themselves to this process. This sense of deep, personal dedication has enormous ramifications for the world in which we live. It’s exhilarating to witness and it’s why we love to attend Honors Day.” 

Oral presentations, project collaborations, and research methodology are just a few of the skills students develop when they participate in Honors Day. Bell said these are skills that will help MMC students succeed after they graduate. “Close relationships with faculty are a hallmark of the Marymount Manhattan educational experience and Honors Day cultivates precisely this kind of relationship,” Bell said. “The Honors Day presentation is an ideal experience for anyone interested in attending graduate school, where the 30-minute oral presentation in a seminar is commonplace, or even for an artist or scientist who needs to present his or her work to a board of directors for funding.” 

Marymount Manhattan students were invited to submit their scholarly works to the Academic Honors Committee for an opportunity to earn prizes and recognition during Honors Day. Prizes to be awarded on Honors Day 2011 include the Dean’s Award for Excellence ($500); the Dean’s Award - Honorable Mention ($250); the Alpha Chi Award ($250); the Writing I and II Awards ($100 each); the Student/Faculty Collaboration Award ($100); and the newly established Alumni Award ($250). 

Honors Day will also include inductions into the College’s honor societies. The induction schedule is as follows:

9:00–9:45 a.m.: Alpha Chi (Faculty Advisor: Carrie-Ann Biondi, Ph.D.)
1:00–2:00 p.m.: Pi Sigma Alpha (Faculty Advisor: Kent Worcester, Ph.D.)
2:00–3:00 p.m.: Kappa Delta Pi (Faculty Advisor: Clare Lowell, Ed.D.)
3:00–4:00 p.m.: Sigma Tau Delta (Faculty Advisor: Peter Naccarato, Ph.D.)
5:00-6:00 p.m.: Sigma Beta Delta (Faculty Advisor: Andrea Tsentides, MBA, CPA)
5:00–6:00 p.m.: Lambda Pi Eta (Faculty Advisor: Corey Liberman, Ph.D.)
