Students Showcase Academic Research, Earn Prizes at Honors Day 2011

New York, N.Y. – On March 16, Marymount Manhattan College hosted Honors Day to celebrate intellectual and creative achievement by students and their faculty mentors through the sharing of outstanding student work. 

The Honors Colloquium took place throughout the afternoon in the College’s classrooms and performance spaces. Selected students presented research papers, scholarly works, creative projects (such as paintings and photographs, dramatic and dance performances, and videos), and the results of scientific projects conducted independently and in concert with faculty mentors. Marymount Manhattan students were invited to submit their scholarly works to the Academic Honors Committee for an opportunity to earn prizes and recognition during Honors Day. Prizes awarded on Honors Day 2011 included: 

The Dean’s Award for Excellence ($500): Matthew Whitt, who presented “American Liberalism and Chinese Democracy: How the Shift toward Liberal U.S.-China Relations May Help to Encourage Eventual Democratization in China,” sponsored by Ghassan Shabaneh, Ph.D., associate professor of international studies and chair, department of international studies. 

The Dean’s Award - Honorable Mention ($250): Hadley Cooney, who presented “Universals and a Meaningful Language,” sponsored by Carrie-Ann Biondi, Ph.D., assistant professor of philosophy 

The Dean’s Award - Honorable Mention ($250): David Moldover, who presented “Guilty Bystanders,” sponsored by Giovanna Chesler, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication arts. 

The Alpha Chi Award ($250): Heather Kowalski, who presented “’Made in China: The World’s Newest Warning Label,” sponsored by Yu-Yin Cheng, Ph.D., associate professor of history and international studies 

The Writing 101 Award for Excellence ($100): Derek Fearon, who presented “Four Different Women: An Exploration of Self-Creation Through Visual Media” sponsored by Eberly Mareci, Ph.D., instructor in writing. 

The Writing 102 Award for Excellence ($100): Emilie Maurer who presented “Veiling: Her Face, Her Life, Her Choice,” sponsored by Magdalena Maczynska, Ph.D., assistant professor of English and director of the Writing Seminar Program. 

The Student/Faculty Collaboration Award ($100): Laura Herren, who presented “Pathways to Natural Organochlorine Formation in Decaying Plant Material: A Novel Assay,” sponsored by Alessandra Leri, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry and environmental science. 

The Alumni Association Award ($250): Meghan Quinlan, “Dance Education in New Hampshire Public Schools,” sponsored by Katie Langan, B.A., professor of dance and chair, department of dance. 

“Honors Day is the highlight of the academic year at the College because it allows us to shine a spotlight on students that have produced outstanding academic and creative work in a wide variety of disciplines,” said Adrienne Baxter Bell, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history and chair of the Academic Honors Committee. “Through their hard work and creativity, these students have taken existing problems and found fresh solutions and responses to them. They show us what it means to transcend the ordinary and the commonplace, and to strive for great achievement.”

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
