Rosie Wenrich, a junior Biology major, presents at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society.
In June, student Rosie Wenrich and Associate Professor of Chemistry Alessandra Leri presented research at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society (MARMACS).
This year, MARMACS was held at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY.
Rosie Wenrich, a junior Biology major, presented a poster, “Tracing Marine Particulate Organic Carbon from Primary Production to Sedimentation,” on the environmental chemistry research she conducts with Prof. Leri. Rosie works in the 6th-floor chemistry lab at Marymount Manhattan, using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform-infrared (ATR-FT-IR) spectroscopy to characterize marine organic matter samples from the Arabian Sea. Her research focuses on the types of organic molecules that become buried in sediment, shedding light on a sedimentary sink for atmospheric carbon. Rosie has been conducting research with Prof. Leri since her sophomore year.
Prof. Leri also presented research at MARMACS, in a talk entitled “Bromination of Soil Organic Particulates through Abiotic Mechanisms.” Her talk detailed the role of bromide as a versatile electron donor in reactions that potentially contribute to the degradation and preservation of organic matter in forest soil.
As MMC worked to reopen its Main Campus for the Fall 2020 semester, the Department of Natural Sciences developed a plan to continue performing in-person laboratory courses while also accommodating remote learners. MMC’s science labs underwent extensive safety reinforcement to allow in-person students to participate in labs with their remote partners learning from home.
