Andrew C. Revkin Delivers Inaugural Barry Commoner Environmental Lecture

New York, N.Y. – On March 21, prize-winning environmental journalist Andrew C. Revkin delivered the first Barry Commoner Environmental Lecture, “Nine Billion People Plus One Planet Equals?,” at Marymount Manhattan College in the Great Hall. His lecture provided solutions to making the world’s anticipated spike in population by the year 2050 livable for the future. In his optimistic view, Revkin suggested an exploration of ways in which colleges can foster progress on a finite planet, including using technology in more creative ways to communicate environmental standards worldwide.

Revkin, the senior fellow for environmental understanding at Pace University, now writes the Dot Earth blog for the op-ed pages of The New York Times, creating a forum where hundreds of thousands of readers “meet” each month to evaluate and discuss climate, biodiversity, population and related subjects. On Thursday, he featured MMC student Alexis van Dijk ’12 and her video on Dot Earth. The communication arts video portrays how plastic trash can kill marine life. During Honors Day, Van Dijk also presented her project “Is the System Broken?,” sponsored by Stephen Milioti, adjunct assistant professor of journalism. 

The Barry Commoner Environmental Lecture Series was established at Marymount Manhattan College through the gifts from the husband and wife team of Richard S. Berry and Lucy A. Commoner. These gifts have also created The Commoner Fund for Environmental Studies at the College. Barry Commoner is a prominent environmental scientist, widely known as a writer and lecturer on the relation between environmental and energy problems and public policy. Ms. Commoner, Dr. Commoner’s daughter, is a graduate of Brown University and is the head of conservation at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Mr. Berry is an attorney and a managing partner with the real estate development firm of Zuberry Associates, LLC in New York City. He served as a trustee of Marymount Manhattan from 1999 until 2007.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
