Honors Day Features Student Research at 35th Annual Honors Colloquium

New York, N.Y.– On March 21, Marymount Manhattan College hosted Honors Day to celebrate intellectual and creative achievement by students and their faculty mentors through the sharing of outstanding student work. 

The Honors Colloquium took place throughout the day in the College’s classrooms and performance spaces. Selected students presented research papers, scholarly works, creative projects, and the results of scientific projects conducted independently and in concert with faculty mentors. Marymount Manhattan students were invited to submit their scholarly works to the Academic Honors Committee for an opportunity to earn awards and recognition during Honors Day. Prizes awarded on Honors Day 2012 included: 

The Writing Program Award: Alexis Briscuso ’14, who presented “Hermione Granger and Heroic Equality,” sponsored by Carrie-Ann Biondi, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy. 

The Student/Faculty Collaboration Awards: Senada Paljevic ’14, who presented “A Four-Part Curricular Intervention to Enhance Positive Intentions Towards Children with Disabilities,” sponsored by Nava Silton, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology; and Alexandra Tarasenko ’12, who presented “BPA Leading in Baby Bottle Upon Microwave Heating: A Simulation of Real Good Conditions,” sponsored by Benedetta Sampoli-Benitez, Ph.D. , associate professor of chemistry. 

The Alpha Chi Award: Cathryn Adams ’12, who presented “There Can Be No Compulsion in Religion (2:256): An Islamic Case for Secularism,” sponsored by Elizabeth Barre, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies. 

The Alumni Association Awards: Faith “Liz” Ball ’12, who presented “You Can’t Sit with Us! Relational Aggression in the World of Female Adolescence,” sponsored by Cheryl Paradis, Psy.D., associate professor of psychology; and Emma Davis-Kos ’13, who presented “Organic Chemistry of Acrylamide and Its Presence in Fried Food,” sponsored by Benedetta Sampoli-Benitez, Ph.D. 

The Dean’s Award for Excellence: Monica Wiles ’13, who presented “Marx, the Master and Me,” sponsored by Bradley Herling, Ph.D., assistant professor of religious studies. 

The Dean’s Award – Honorable Mention: Sofija Gligorov ’13, who presented “Antimicrobial Resistance: The Threat of a Return to a Pre-Antibiotic era,” sponsored by Judith Hanks, Ph.D., associate professor of biology . 

Carrie-Ann Biondi was also named the recipient of Marymount Manhattan’s Teaching Excellence Award, which honors a faculty member who exemplifies the best in student-centered teaching and learning. Click hereto read her award speech. 

The Senior Awards Ceremony recognized graduating seniors with Gold Keys, which are awarded to graduates who have achieved excellence in their chosen academic fields; Certificates for Excellence in Academic Minors; and Silver M awards, which distinguishes students for their overall leadership contribution to the College.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
