Biology Teaching Workshop A Great Success

On Saturday, March 5th, twenty-eight faculty from colleges across the region participated in a workshop at MMC exploring best practices in college science teaching.

The workshop, hosted by Dr. Ann Aguanno, Associate Professor of Biology, drew faculty from Yale University, Albert Einstein Medical College, St. Francis College, St. John’s University, Mount St. Mary College, NYU Medical Center, Northeastern University, and Penn State, among other institutions in the region. The day-long program featured the development of assessment instruments and teaching strategies aligned to learning goals in the molecular life sciences. Working in small groups, faculty generated and shared ideas about teaching science and measuring student learning outcomes. The workshop was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and is the third in a series hosted by Dr. Aguanno at MMC.

Safety Precautions and Synchronous Learning: MMC Laboratories in the Time of COVID

As MMC worked to reopen its Main Campus for the Fall 2020 semester, the Department of Natural Sciences developed a plan to continue performing in-person laboratory courses while also accommodating remote learners. MMC’s science labs underwent extensive safety reinforcement to allow in-person students to participate in labs with their remote partners learning from home.
