MMC Serves wants you to know how you can help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT/DONATIONS
MMC will be collecting change, cash and checks through Friday, November 16. Proceeds will benefit members of the MMC community who have suffered devastation and loss, as well as the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. All donations to this fund will support immediate aid needs – including water, food, and hygiene supplies – as well as long-term relief and restoration efforts.

Containers for change and small bills are located in the Commons, Career Services (Main 106), Multi-Faith Center (Main 412) and Student Affairs/Academic Affairs Suite (Main 807). We’d like to collect check donations payable to Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, so that Marymount Manhattan College can donate as one organization. Include the memo “Hurricane Sandy Relief.” Please drop off your check with Misty Beasley in Main 412 or call Student Affairs at x 750 and we’ll send someone to pick it up.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We have students whose homes were destroyed out in Queens. Join MMC Serves for site clean-up at Breezy Point on this Friday, November 9 from approximately 10am-7pm (including commuting time). If you are available, please email Misty at mbeasley@mmm.edu for additional details.

The list below includes organizations that sponsor volunteers to help in the recovery effort. If you would like volunteer or donate food, toiletries or supplies, please contact the sites listed above. (Please note most organizations are no longer accepting clothing and the list of requests change frequently).

American Red Cross; Greater New York Region
Food Bank for NYC
Long Island Volunteer Center
Jersey Cares
New York Cares
NYC Service
Occupy Sandy Relief
United Way of New York City
United We Serve

Note: Many organizations are overwhelmed by the support they have received and may be finding it difficult to assess needs and assign volunteers. Please be patient, your assistance and support is greatly needed. Recovery lasts a lot longer than the media attention. There will be volunteer needs for many months, often years, after a disaster - especially when the community enters the long-term recovery period.

OTHER WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE
Giving Blood: Over 100 blood drives were canceled in the New York Metropolitan area last week due to the storm, including our own MMC Blood drive. We are working to reschedule a drive, but we may not be able to do one until February 2013. Blood supplies are reported to be very low. You may give blood through the NY Blood Center.

Donation Drive: On Friday, November 9, Good Day NY will be hosting “Good Day Cares.” During their broadcast, Catholic Charities will be collecting badly-needed supplies just outside the studio at 205 East 67th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues). The drive will start at 7am. The items most needed include: cleaning supplies, shovels, rakes, brooms, work gloves, heavy duty garbage bags, face masks, batteries, toiletries, Tylenol, Advil, disposable gloves, diapers, wipes, baby food, formula, can openers.
