Boren Scholar Alvin Young ‘13 Earns Internship with the Caribbean Community Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations

During the internship, Young will research pertinent topics related to current foreign affairs and compile information into reports that will be sent to CARICOM Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana, as well as to government leaders of member states. Young will also have the opportunity to attend briefs and meetings both within the United Nations headquarters and in various embassies located in New York City. 

Young, the first student from Marymount Manhattan College to receive a Boren Scholarship, spent the 2011-2012 academic year studying Arabic at the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in Morocco. Originally from Jamaica, Young also speaks French. 

“Being a Boren Scholar in Morocco taught me the relationship Morocco has with the national security of the United States,” Young said. “While being abroad this year, I came to understand that I have drifted away from my knowledge of what Caribbean culture was and more importantly what it meant to be Jamaican. My experiences with people in Morocco have opened my eyes to the importance of staying close to one’s culture and identity. CARICOM will further prepare me for my future and working with other international institutions, by providing me with the opportunity to become involved in important real-world issues. It is important that I gain an experience of how the Caribbean relates to the globe, and through my research, help other members of the United Nations understand the importance of working with CARICOM and ensuring its message is heard on the international stage.”
