MMC Pedagogy Initiatives

 As part of the program, twelve Marymount faculty members submitted project proposals to introduce or expand place-based learning in their courses. Over the course of three intensive workshop sessions, institute participants deepened their knowledge of philosophies and practices of place-based learning through a series of readings, interactive presentations, and place-based learning experiences. Coordinated by Dr. Sharon Meagher (Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty) and Dr. Julie Huntington (Associate Professor of English and World Literatures), the program featured Marymount faculty presenters who incorporate place-based pedagogies into their courses offered in New York City and abroad. In addition, featured guest Dr. Michael Menser (Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Brooklyn College) shared his insights on learning outcomes for place-based education through participatory budget and urban sustainability projects. On the final day of the institute, faculty participants presented their projects in-progress and exchanged feedback on their work. Their innovative place-based learning enhancements will be included in courses across the curriculum over the span of the 2018-2019 academic year—including first-year New York City seminars and Writing courses, in senior capstone courses, and in a wide variety of content courses in Business, Communication and Media Arts, English and World Literatures, Politics and Human Rights, Speech-Language Pathology, and Studio Art.
