2020 Leadership Awards

Each year, The Office of Student Development and Activities hosts the Student Leadership Awards: The Griffys. The awards ceremony is held in the spring semester and aims to recognize student leaders who exemplify scholarship, service, leadership, diversity, spirit, innovation and excellence. Students recognized at the Student Leadership Awards are the very best of our involvement community, they enhance MMC by selflessly giving back their time, energy and resources in order to create a better community for all of us.

  • Advisor of the Year

    The Advisor of the Year Award recognizes the registered student organization advisor who has gone above and beyond in their support of student involvement in the RSO in order to help those student advance the mission of the organization as well as the mission of the institution.

    Nominators: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how this advisor has worked diligently to guide and inspire RSO members. Strong nominators will share information about the impact the advisor has had on the RSO officers, members, and with other members of the community on behalf of the RSO. 

    Eligibility: Nominees must be a full-time faculty or staff member serving in the capacity of advisor for a registered student organization with the office of Student Development and Activities. Nominees must have served at least one semester as an RSO advisor. 

  • Core Council Organizational Excellence Award

    The Core Council Organization Excellence Award recognizes one Core Council RSO that has served as a model member of the Core Council; providing involvement opportunities, celebrating the inclusive mission of MMC, and championing the cultivation of the student leaders at MMC. 

    Nominations: Nominations for this award are made exclusively by the members of the Core Council within a regularly scheduled meeting of the board.

    Eligibility:  Eligible RSOs are those who are Core Council member organizations and have been active for the current, full academic year. The RSO must be currently active, meeting all requirements of active status with the office of Student Development and Activities. Only the organizations listed below are recognized as Core Council members

  • President’s Spirit Award

    The President’s Spirit Award recognizes one student that has shown significant school spirit and pride in being an MMC Griffin. The Spirit Award recognizes outstanding leadership, and the ability to influence others to advance the mission of the college.

    Nominators: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how the student shares school spirit and the pride they have in being an MMC Griffin. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this student has had on the college, their peers and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility: Nominees must be a full-time student currently enrolled at MMC and ideally will be someone who serves as an unofficial ambassador for the institution. They exude pride in Marymount Manhattan and are excited to help others find their fit at MMC. The award recipient must also currently hold a GPA of 3.0 or better.

  • Outstanding New RSO Member

    The Outstanding New RSO Member Award recognizes a new RSO member that has, in their brief tenure, established themselves as a driven and committed member of their RSO; volunteering their time, assisting fellow members, and contributing to the mission of their organization. 

    Nominations: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how this new member has set themselves apart as a shining example of their RSO, has cultivated an inclusive atmosphere, or has further contributed to the objectives of their RSO’s community. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this new member has had on the college, their peers, and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility:  Eligible new members are those who have joined their organization within the last two academic terms. The new member must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program and maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

  • Outstanding New Registered Student Organization

    The Outstanding New Registered Student Organization Award recognizes one RSO that has, in its brief tenure, established themselves as an exemplary member of the RSO community; providing involvement opportunities for fellow students to get involved as well as encouraging the inclusive mission of MMC. 

    Nominations: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how this new RSO has set themselves apart producing successful programming, cultivating an inclusive atmosphere, and by establishing their group as a committed contributing member of the MMC community. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this organization has had on the college, their peers, and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility:  Eligible RSOs are those who have founded their organization within the last four academic terms (inclusive of the spring semester of the awards ceremony). The RSO must be currently active, meeting all requirements of active status with the office of Student Development and Activities.

  • Outstanding Organization of the Year

    The Outstanding Organization of the Year Award recognizes one RSO that has served as a model member of the RSO community; providing involvement opportunities, celebrating the inclusive mission of MMC, and championing the cultivation of the student leaders in their community. 

    Nominations: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how this RSO has set themselves apart producing successful programming, cultivating an inclusive atmosphere, and by establishing their group as a leader among the MMC community. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this organization has had on the college, their peers, and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility:  Eligible RSOs are those who have been active for the current, full academic year. The RSO must be currently active, meeting all requirements of active status with the office of Student Development and Activities.

  • Outstanding Cultural Peer Mentor Award

    The Outstanding Cultural Peer Mentor Award recognizes one student Cultural Peer Mentor who has served in exemplary fashion to aid in the acclimation of new international students to MMC. The Outstanding CPM Award recognizes exceptional leadership, the ability to mentor one’s peers, a vested interest in the wellbeing of new students, and a strong command of the responsibilities of those in the CPM role.

    Nominators: Nominations for this award are made exclusively by the members of the Cultural Peer Mentor staff.

    Eligibility: Nominees must currently hold the position of CPM and maintain a GPA of 3.0 to be considered. 

  • Outstanding Peer Leader

    The Outstanding Peer Leader Award recognizes one student Peer Leader who has served in exemplary fashion to aid in the acclimation of new students to MMC. The Outstanding Peer Leader Award recognizes exceptional leadership, the ability to mentor one’s peers, a vested interest in the wellbeing of new students, and a strong command of the responsibilities of those in the PL role.

    Nominators:  A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how the PL serves as an exemplary role model and support to new students. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this PL has had on the college, their new students, and the community as a whole.

    Eligibility: Nominees must currently hold the position of Peer Leader and maintain a GPA of 3.0 to be considered. 

  • Outstanding Student Leader

    The  Outstanding Student Leader Awards recognize student leaders, within class years,  who show exemplary leadership skills with organizations and throughout campus. These student leaders serve as models for their peers in advancing the mission of their organizations, advocating for their respective constituencies, and contributing to a community spirit of inclusive leadership.

    Nominators: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how the student leader ‘models the way’ for their peers and distinguishes themselves as a dependable, reliable, and committed member of any organization to which they claim membership. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this student has had on the College, their peers, and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility: Nominees must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. For the respective class-year-based categories, the nominees must have obtained the appropriate number of credits (at the time of the Leadership Awards program) listed below.

    • First-year Leader of the Year Award (less than 30 credits)
    • Sophomore Leader of the Year Award (30-59 credits)
    • Junior Leader of the Year Award (60-89 credits)
    • Senior Leader of the Year Award (90 credits and above)
  • Program of the Year Awards

    The Program of the Year Awards recognizes RSO programs that have built community in any one of the areas of performance, academia, community engagement, culture, and inclusion, or community building.

    Nominators: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how the nominated program showcased the RSOs mission to contribute to the MMC community, inspired inclusion, and promoted developmental ideals. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this program has had on the college, the participants, and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility: Eligible programs must have been sponsored or co-sponsored by a Registered Student Organization that is in good standing with Student Development and Activities. Programs must have taken place within the current semester or the one immediately preceding it.

  • The Dean’s Award

    The Dean’s Award recognizes excellence in student leadership and commendable attention to, and advocacy for one’s fellow students.  

    Nominations: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how this student has advocated for their fellow students while exuding excellence in leadership. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this student has had on the college, their peers, and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility:  Eligible students must have a GPA of 2.5, be currently enrolled, and be in good standing with Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. 

  • The IDEAL Award

    The IDEAL Award recognizes one student/organization that has made a significant impact on the institution by celebrating and encouraging the highest ideals of diversity and inclusion.

    Nominators: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how the nominee embraces the institution’s commitment to inclusion and diversity and champions initiatives to proactively encourage growth in the MMC community. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this nominee has had on the college, the students and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility: Eligible students must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program and maintaining a 2.5 (or higher) GPA. Eligible organizations must be currently active RSOs, meeting all the requirements laid out by the Student Development and Activities office.

  • The Marymount Muscle Community Engagement Award

    The Marymount Muscle Community Engagement Award recognizes one student/organization that has made a significant impact or contribution to MMC or the surrounding NYC community.

    Nominators: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how the nominee or RSO actively engages with their community and continually contributes time and energy for the betterment of communities in need. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this nominee or RSO has had on the college, the students, and the campus community as a whole.

    Eligibility: Eligible students must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program and maintaining a 2.5 (or higher) GPA. Eligible organizations must be currently active RSOs, meeting all the requirements laid out by the Student Development and Activities office.

  • The Unsung Hero Award

    The Unsung Hero Award recognizes one student who may not hold a position of leadership but has shown significant commitment to their organization and has proven themselves to be a dedicated participant in all programs, meetings, and activities initiated by their RSO. 

    Nominators: A strong nomination will include tangible examples of how the student has proven their commitment to the RSO time and again. Strong nominators will share relevant information about the impact this student has had on RSO programming, RSO leadership, and their fellow students.

    Eligibility: An eligible nominee is a student who may not have held an official position in the past. They must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program and maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

2017 Leadership Awards


All awards are given for performance/activity within the 2019-2020 academic year.

You may submit as many nominations as you like.

 We will begin accepting nominations on Sunday, March 1, 2020

The awards will be held on Friday, May 1, 2020, at 5:30 PM on Instagram, follow @MMCSDA.

Nominees will be notified of their nomination upon receipt of the invitation.
