Leadership Development

The Emerging Leaders program is for new leaders. The focus is on teaching students the fundamental skills of good leadership practice.

Through a series of weekly workshops that cover topics ranging from communication skills and problem-solving to time management and addressing conflicts, students will discover their own unique leadership style and voice as they progress through this program. Applications are available in the fall for the program which takes place in the spring semester. The curriculum consists of a weekly professional development/skills-building workshop, community service projects, group assignments, and a final presentation about the whole experience.

During the fall semester, students are able to apply for a two-day, one-night adventure at Camp Mason in Hardwick, NJ. With the Student Development and Activities team, student participants will explore what it means to be a leader by exploring their skills and the skills of those around them through discussions, workshops, and challenging outdoor activities hosted by the staff at Camp Mason.

All students are encouraged to attend no matter your group affiliations. Members of the Core Council are required to participate in Leadership Immersion Weekend. RSOs are encouraged to have at least one officer represent the group for the weekend.

Student Development and Activities hosts the annual Leadership Summit for all students at the beginning of the spring semester. While the topic varies from year to year, the theme always relates to leadership. Past themes include:

• Intersectionality in Leadership (2019)
• Power and Leadership (2018)
• Movements and Protest (2017)
• Leadership Through Collective Action (2016)
• Leadership Style and Conflict (2015)

Throughout the day, you’ll sit in on a keynote speaker and various breakout sessions. The day concludes with a networking lunch where you’ll be able to discuss what you’ve learned with fellow participants.

The Peer Leader Program is a highly selective leadership opportunity for returning students. Peer Leaders (PLs) play a key role in orienting incoming first-year students to the college community by serving as mentors and guides during Welcome Week and Orientation and as a teaching assistant for the required LINK 101 sessions during the fall semester. PLs receive intensive leadership training, an opportunity to network with faculty and staff, and are compensated for their work.

Students who are interested must complete an online application and participate in an interview. The selection process begins in the spring semester.

At MMC, all student organizations are completely student-led, but we know that leading a student group can sometimes present its own unique set of challenges. That’s why we offer the RSO Officer Training program. This program is designed to support students who maintain leadership roles in official, MMC-recognized organizations by training students on how to navigate administrative issues, identify resources, and fulfill all requirements established by our office.

At least one current officer from each RSO is required to attend a training session at the beginning of each fall semester. Additional training sessions can be requested at any point throughout the semester and can focus on any number of topics, including but not limited to general RSO training, fiscal management, and member recruitment and retention.
