Housing Assignments
We hope to see you on campus! Housing assignments are sent out in August for the Fall semester, and January for the Spring semester.
DETERMINING HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS
Students who live at the Marymount Manhattan College residence halls are part of a community where memories are made and lifelong friendships are discovered. We strive to create a community where like-minded students are placed together based off of the information from their roommate matching survey and their roommate groups. Students are placed in same or mixed gender apartments (gender-neutral housing) on co-ed floors.
Factors that are taken into consideration when determining housing assignments:
-
Deposit and application date
-
Gender identity ** (male, female, non-binary)
-
Disability accommodations, please see Disability Services
-
Roommate requests (the size of your roommate group does not determine your apartment size).
-
Personal preferences based on the roommate matching survey
Although we make every effort to assign students to their permanent space before their arrival, we reserve the right to move a resident after room assignments have been made. Residents are generally assigned to a building based on their cohort group (e.g. First-Year, Transfer, Returning) listed below; although we reserve the right to place a student in any available bed.
**Residence Life is supportive of all students including those who identify as transgender and those with a gender identity that is not traditionally associated with their birth sex. Housing assignments will be made on the basis of gender with which the student currently identifies. Current and incoming students with concerns relating to their gender identify/expression are urged to speak to Residence Life staff so we can assist the student in navigating their housing options.
STUDENT COHORTS
First-Year Students
The majority of first-year students are placed at the 55th Street Residence Hall, although some first-year students are assigned to the Cooper Square Residence Hall. Room assignments are generated randomly and your roommate group size does not determine your apartment size. In years with a large incoming class, we may need to place first-year students at a different location.
Transfer Students
Students who are transferring into MMC may be placed at either the Cooper Square Residence Hall or the 55th Street Residence Hall. We aim to place transfer students in bedrooms together so their direct roommates are other transfer students, but at times transfers may be placed with returning MMC students or first-year students.
Returning Students
Returning students are placed at the Cooper Square Residence Hall. When you apply for housing, you will be given the option to be on the 55th Street waitlist. If you are placed at 55th Street, you will be notified when you receive your room assignment.
BED ASSIGNMENTS
All of our beds are regular size twin beds. Students are assigned their bedroom set (by color coded system) when they receive their room assignment information. We cannot take requests for specific beds, however if you and your roommate would like to swap beds, please email residencelife@mmm.edu so that we can further assist you. Students may be placed in the following bed configurations:
Delofted: Bed will be at around hip height, usually with dresser drawers underneath
Lofted: Beds will be raised and students will be provided with a ladder and guard rail. Dresser and desk may be placed under the bed to make a private study space.
Bunk-Beds: Top and bottom bunk beds, usually with dressers underneath.
Mid-height: Beds are elevated at higher than hip height, and may have dressers underneath. These beds are found at 55th Street only.
After you have received your bed assignment, please see the floor plan information for your respective floor plan.
ROOMMATE GROUPS
Students will be placed with roommates based off of their roommate requests and their roommate matching profile from the housing application. We strive to match students on as many of their preferences from their housing application as possible. Students who would like to select their own roommate have the option to do so by requesting a “Roommate Group” on their housing application. While we cannot guarantee roommate matches, we do try to accommodate roommate requests whenever possible.
To select a Roommate Group:
-
Select your Roommate Group via MMC Residence, by either inputting a roommate code or finding a match the Residence website.
-
You will not be able to share roommate codes to request roommate groups until each student has been “approved” for housing—meaning each student must submit their housing application and their housing deposit. Once your application is approved, you will receive an automated email.
Please note the following regarding Roommate Group requests:
-
Matches must be mutual and requested by both parties to be approved.
-
You will only be able to match with students from your cohort (first-year, transfer, continuing). If you would like to be paired with an individual from outside of your cohort, please contact residencelife@mmm.edu.
-
Roommate groups can vary in size from 2 to 7 individuals. Your roommate group does not determine the size of your apartment. For example, if you create a 4 person roommate group, you may be placed together with a 3 person roommate group within a 7 person apartment.
-
For students who would like to be in mixed gender roommate groups, all students need to agree to gender neutral housing. We cannot verify that all students who are in a group have signed up for gender neutral housing before housing assignments are sent out. If you did not opt-in to gender neutral housing, you can change your preferences within MMC Residence.
-
Students who identify as non-binary will be placed together or within gender-neutral housing. Roommates who are are non-binary may be placed with a student of the opposite sex who also identifies as non-binary. If you have questions or concerns about placements regarding gender expression, please contact residencelife@mmm.edu.
MEETING ROOMMATES
While some students will find a roommate via social media platforms or College hosted events, some other students may be placed together based on their roommate matching profile. Students who receive a roommate assignment will be tempted to look up their roommates on social media, and while we understand the desire to get to know everything about new roommates, we suggest students call and talk to their new roommates first instead. Social media can be a poor representation of who a person is; talking is much better! Please note that the College will not make room changes based on information from online communities, nor for any reasons that are discriminatory in nature.
DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS
If you require any type of disability accommodation (including, but not limited to: a de-lofted bed, an assistance animal, a small occupancy room), please be in touch with the Office of Disability Services to register and request an accommodation. Requests should be made at the same time as the housing application is submitted. Please note that MMC does not offer single bedrooms.
GENDER NEUTRAL HOUSING
At Marymount Manhattan College we seek to create a residential experience that is inclusive of all gender identities and gender expressions. We understand that living in a residence hall where room assignments are based on one’s sex isn’t comfortable or desirable for some students. Out of our deep respect for the uniqueness and validity of the self-perceptions of each of our students, we offer gender-inclusive housing options for all residents.
Please note the following regarding Gender Neutral Housing:
- Students must OPT IN to participate; if you are interested in gender neutral housing, you are open to living with a person of any gender.
- If you are under 18, you will need your parent’s permission to participate. We encourage all students to share their decision with their family.
- You may select your own roommates. All requests must be mutual, and be submitted by the deadline.
- If you sign up for gender neutral housing and don’t have a roommate request, we will match you based on your application preferences.
- In the event that your roommate moves out mid-year, another student may be placed into your room who has also opted-in to gender neutral housing.
- Please understand that individuals are not placed into gender neutral rooms based on sex.
Traditional, same-sex room assignments are not always comfortable or appropriate for all students. As we strive to create an inclusive and safe residential experience, offering gender-neutral housing both accommodates and respects the complexities of gender identity. It also demonstrates our belief that every student matters.
LIVING WITH A RESIDENT ADVISOR (RA)
Although Resident Advisors are able to select their roommates, it’s possible that any student may be placed with an RA, particularly returning students who have expressed interest in living at 55 th Street.
As a roommate of an RA, please note the following:
-
The RA is expected to be available to their residents, so you may expect knocks on the door often. If the RA is not home when a student knocks, you should be kind in letting the resident know the RA is not available and take a message so that the RA may address the resident’s concern.
-
RA apartments are also required to be tour rooms. It is expected that you maintain a tidy room for tours.
-
The RA may need to have meetings with a resident inside the suite, and your cooperation and discretion is appreciated.
NUT ALLERGY
MMC is not a nut-free community, but if you would like to be matched with a nut-free roommate, please indicate this on your housing application. We cannot guarantee a nut-free room, but will do our best to accommodate your request.
