Home Sharing Program
The Home Sharing Program through New York Foundation for Senior Citizens matches seniors with compatible persons of any age, in shared-living arrangements in homes throughout New York City. The program provides companionship, eases financial burdens, and relieves feelings of loneliness.
Who is eligible?
Prospective adult “hosts” who have a private bedroom available within their homes are linked to prospective adult “guests” to share the space. One of the “matchmates” must be age 60 or over. The homes must be located in one of NYC’s five boroughs.
Guests may choose to contribute toward hosts’ monthly household expenses or provide household services in exchange for lower monthly payments.
What services will be provided?
New York Foundation for Senior Citizens’ professional social work staff will provide comprehensive, confidential screening and matching services. The staff also will provide assistance with negotiating shared living arrangements. Once the host and guest agree to share living quarters, a “match” is made.
What is the cost?
There is no charge for the Home Sharing Program’s matching service. However, Home Sharing participants are responsible for all housing-related expenses. Average monthly rent typically falls within the $700 to $1500 range, depending on location.
Who funds the Home Sharing Program?
This program is made possible by grants administered by the New York State Governor’s Executive Budget, New York State Legislature, New York State Office for the Aging, New York City Department for the Aging, New York City Council Members and Borough Presidents, the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, and the generosity of private foundations and donors.
Please note: this program is not affiliated with Marymount Manhattan College. We offer information here as a link to alternative housing, but we are not otherwise connected with this program.
