Emergency Preparedness
When weather emergencies are predicted, residents will be notified of school closings. Our residence halls remain open, unless there is significant danger in staying at our location. Residents will be alerted to any necessary changes. In order to prepare for weather emergencies, we suggest residents follow the tips below:
Groceries: We recommend making sure your cabinets are well-stocked with food items in case the weather conditions make the sidewalks too treacherous. Although unlikely, to be best prepared, have foods that can be prepared with or without power. Should we experience severe weather conditions, it is likely local grocery stores or restaurants may not be open. In January and Summer sessions the C-Store is closed; during the fall and spring semesters, the C-Store staff person may not be able to get to 55th Street and open the C-Store.
ConnectEd: Should the storm warrant class or activity cancellations, this is how you will be notified. Go to your student portal (located at the bottom of our home page) and make sure you are signed up for text or phone call notification.
Charge your phones: Make sure your phones are fully charged should there be a power outage.
Call your parents! Parents worry! Call them to let them know you are safe and keep them informed about the conditions. They can also follow our Twitter and Facebook posts and the school’s homepage for more info.
Close blinds: When the storm with high winds hits, it is a good idea to make sure your blinds are closed in case a window breaks. This is unlikely to happen, but it is better to err on the side of caution.
Water: Loss of water is also unlikely, but during storms it’s a good idea to have extra water on hand (fill containers and place in refrigerator).
Balcony: At 55th Street and Cooper Square, it is possible the balcony and terrace spaces will be closed early, depending on the severity of the storm.
Don’t be bored! The RA office has several games and DVDs available to be checked out.
Flashlights: Having a flashlight and batteries on hand is never a bad idea! Remember, candles are not permitted under any circumstances!
Facebook and Twitter: You can follow Residence Life for the most up-to-the-moment information. Also check MMC’s homepage for important information.
