Academic Writing professor Tahneer Oksman writes, “I have spent countless summers in this coastal city in Israel where my mother was born, and where I still have a cluster of relatives. Over time, I have seen the city transformed from an unknown entity with a single mall and movie theater to a booming tourist destination. While my relationship to the city has grown more complex over time, it’s strangely comforting to remember idyllic childhood summers spent sulking on a nearly-empty and gorgeous beach where I could buy a scoop of ice cream for one shekel (the equivalent of about 50 cents).”
