In Memoriam: Eileen P. McCardle ’50, One of “Original Four” MMC Graduates

The entire Marymount Manhattan College community mourns the loss of Eileen P. McCardle ’50, one of the four original graduates of MMC’s inaugural class. With us since our beginning in Tarrytown, New York, Mrs. McCardle remained an impassioned supporter of the College and its alumni. Her generosity and spirit will always be remembered.

An engaged student in the MMC community, Mrs. McCardle was involved with the Dramatic Club as both an actress and a stage manager, notably found playing piano during sing-a-longs. As an alumna, she gave back to the College through donations, supporting future generations of MMC students.

“Mom always supported Marymount and its alumni with wholehearted gusto,” says Mrs. McCardle’s daughter, Eileen McCardle Maloney. “You could not have had a prouder graduate.”

After graduating with a B.A. from Marymount Manhattan and an M.Ed. from Rowan University, she taught elementary school in New York City, Westchester County, and Haddon Township, New Jersey. For many years she was the manager of Consignment Galleries in Haddonfield, a parishioner of Christ the King Parish, and a member of Tavistock Country Club.

Mrs. McCardle passed away on August 16 at the age of 90 after a brief battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Goshen, New York, she moved to Haddonfield in 1959. She was the wife of the late Robert J. McCardle and mother of Robert McCardle of Collingswood, Eileen M. Maloney (P.J.) of Haddonfield, and the late Thomas J. McCardle. She is survived by two brothers, Joseph Pillmeier and Michael Pillmeier; a sister, Nancy Strong; her special cousins of the Croke family; and many nieces and nephews.

Before her passing, Mrs. McCardle requested that we thank the nuns and staff members who had influenced and touched her throughout her life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Angel Flight East, a nonprofit organization for children and adults with medical conditions who require treatment far from home.

Math Department Holds The Eleventh Annual Pi-Day Contest

Every year, the Mathematics department holds a College-wide π-Day contest. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit an original sentence, paragraph, poem, or short story that uses the digits of π in order (π ≈ 3.1415926..).
