Sojourner Truth Suffrage Academy
“ Truth is powerful and it prevails.”
-Sojourner Truth, 1797-1883
The Sojourner Truth Suffrage Academy curriculum is designed to give students the opportunity to explore the history of enfranchisement in the United States and beyond. Courses are offered in departments across the College, including the arts, business, communications, history, and the social sciences; each will critically engage suffrage in its own way.
ABOUT THE ACADEMY
The Sojourner Truth Suffrage Academy of Marymount Manhattan College is an interdisciplinary curriculum sponsored by the Departments of Politics and Human Rights and International Studies in honor of the women whose work led to the 19th Amendment’s ratification and those who continue the struggle for its decolonization. In recognition of the contested history of suffrage, the academy is dedicated to Sojourner Truth (1797-1883), an abolitionist and women’s rights activist, who embodied both that passionate dedication to the cause and that critical spirit to make it more just.
THE CURRICULUM
Courses fulfill requirements, including those of general education, majors, and minors. The Sojourner Truth Suffrage Academy is part of the broader Spring 2021 PHR/IS Event Series and courses therein will variously host speakers and events that are open to the wider community. The Suffrage Academy is assembled from courses in the MMC Academic Catalogue and are taught by full-time faculty. View the Spring 2021 courses here.
Additionally, the Suffrage Academy is collaborating with faculty within the College’s Prison Education programs at the Bedford Hills and Taconic Correctional facilities to provide students at these campuses access to recordings of guest speaker events. Thank you to the New York State Department of Corrections for approving the materials to make this possible, as well as to the various speakers who have all agreed to be recorded.
THE SPRING 2021 EVENT SERIES
The Spring 2021 Speaker and Event Series includes virtual guest lecture talks, films, video art, open dance workshops, and cross-College collaborations. All events will be held on Zoom unless otherwise specified.
