The Theatre and New Media concentration embraces cross-disciplinary opportunities that blend performance with multiple media. Students interested in video, interactive and social media, sound, storytelling, music, and performance explore emerging media technologies to create their own content and individual modes of expression.
Why Study Theatre and New Media at MMC?
You’ll develop hands-on skills in working with video, sound, design, storytelling, and interactive tools to apply to live performance and create digital worlds. As part of MMC’s creative community, students explore individual interests among courses in theatre, media arts, visual arts, music, and creative writing, as well as courses from across the college. With NYC as our campus, students engage with digital arts professionals through field trips, projects, and internships with innovative multimedia companies including 3LD Art & Technology Center, The Wooster Group, Builders Association, The Kitchen, BAM, La Mama, CultureHub, Eyebeam, HERE Arts Center, Brooklyn BRIC, Performa Festival, as well as Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
What You Will Learn
- Learn the tools and skills to create collaborative and multidisciplinary theatre pieces.
- Engage in a variety of production opportunities including the creation of webisodes, audioplays, podcasts, soundscapes, multimedia performances, video memoirs, digital video activism, and documentary and experimental film.
- Study major achievements in the history of mediated performance in terms of their innovative practices and social and cultural influences.
- Explore how the use of new media expands our notions of time, space, and spectacle in the theatre and asks us to reconsider how “liveness” is expressed in performance.
- Connect virtual and actual spaces through the use of moving and still images and sound, and how performers can interact with mediated and recorded material. Study various modes of visual storytelling from theatre, film, dance, and art history.
- Explore how digital theatre forms can expand audience access and reach to engage multiple communities both local and global.

I found myself excited by the class sizes and the opportunity to really make a difference within the community. Dr. Mary Fleischer was integral to my experience at MMC. I got to work with her throughout my years at Marymount and really felt like I made a difference in my major. Her History of New Media class furthered my passion for experimental theater and the January course Experimental Theater was just the icing on the cake.

Stand Up Speak Out Festival
Designed both to connect MMC’s Main Campus and Prison Education programs and to showcase the ways in which higher education can be a tool to stem mass incarceration, the annual Stand Up Speak Out Festival pushes participating students outside of their comfort zones personally, academically, and creatively.
