Why Study Psychology?
You want to understand mental health on more than an intellectual level: How can we increase access to adequate care? What can we do to raise awareness about mental health issues? What are ways we can advocate for those most in need? Discover how psychology can lead to a more just and humane world.
Why Study Psychology at MMC?
Theory and practice go hand-in-hand in our psychology program. Our faculty treat you as budding scholars and help you conduct research, present at conferences, and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Complement the traditional foundations of psychology with emerging areas of study like forensics, art and drama therapy, creative media, and health. People-watching may be a sport in New York, but you’ll be able to do more than that with internships in places like Sesame Street Workshop, the District Attorney’s office, the Child Mind Institute, and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
Graduate with the skills and the experience for a wide variety of careers or to pursue advanced and professional degrees in psychology, counseling, social work, human resources, and market research.
What You Will Learn
- What is the relationship between our bodies and our minds? How do nature and nurture interact to make us who we are? How can our relationships affect one’s sense of self and one’s sense of others? Gain a solid scientific approach to the human mind and learn how other factors shape us as individuals.
- You will learn how to apply key research tools, as well as how to use methods like statistical analysis, tests and measurements, and experimental psychology, for your own research.
- You’ll develop writing and communication skills that will allow you to present psychological material clearly and professionally. You’ll learn scientific and empirical methods of evaluating the world around you, which are in-demand skills in a variety of professions. You’ll feel comfortable synthesizing data and scientific analysis for both professionals in your field and the public at large.
Careers and Outcomes
Addy & Uno and Realabilities Programs
Since 2011, students have worked alongside Nava Silton, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology at MMC, to create Addy & Uno, an off-Broadway musical, and Realabilities, a comic book series, that both star five characters with disabilities on a quest to save their school from bullies. These projects have created real tangible results in schools that have incorporated it as part of their curriculum—and it’s all thanks to the hard work of our students.
